The Law

 

Wanted Level -

   A yellow star shaped badge to the right of your screen indicates that you are a 'wanted' man - police officers will attempt to bust (arrest) you. The more badges, or simply 'stars', you generate, the harder the law will try to bust you. The maximum wanted level you can get is 6. If you are not 'wanted', no badges will appear at the bottom of the HUD.

 

	At the 1 star level, the police aren't too bothered about catching you. Sure, they'll run after or drag you out of your vehicle, but they won't shoot you. You can shake a 1 star wanted level simply by staying out of trouble for a short while.
	Two stars is a little different, in that police officers will shoot at you - and there will be more of them. Police cars will give chase to you more aggressively - forcing your vehicle to spin-out, using various techniques such as the 'P.i.t. maneuver'. Also, you will have to find another way to rid of your wanted level, as you cannot shake two stars just by keeping out of trouble.
	Here's where the helicopters come in - one at a time to start with. The police force show further aggression and determination to get you busted by forming vehicle road barriers. Special undercover cops in a VCPD Cheetah will join in on the action.
	With a four star wanted level, the police are forced to call in the SWAT team. The SWAT team will arrive in SUVs called 'Enforcers', and with their more powerful weapons, they are not to be messed with. Helicopters will deploy SWAT team members, and the police will still play a part in hunting you down - using spike strips (aka stingers), to pop your tires.
	At 5 stars the FBI are called in to finish you off, in their ranchers and Washingtons. They will be accompanied by two police helicopters overhead, and the rest of the police force. There are four FBI agents per FBI rancher and the MP5s they carry are nothing short of deadly.
	The 6 star mark (maximum wanted level) sees the entrance of the army. Rhino tanks and Barracks OL's will flood the streets. Soldiers carry M4 weapons, and can therefore take you out in no time at all. A third helicopter will join the chase.

 

 

Some of the many crimes which can get your wanted level up

 

    • Fighting, shooting, running over pedestrians

    • Jacking vehicles

    • Destroying vehicles

    • Bumping into a Police car

 

How to evade your wanted level

   You can lower your wanted level a number of ways:

 

  1) Pay 'n' Spray - A spray shop which will respray your car. Easily the most effective way to clear your wanted level - just make sure you don't commit any crimes for twenty seconds after you've been resprayed, or your wanted level will come back.

 

  2) Picking up police bribes - Police bribes are the pink items with a golden star in the centre (see items section of this guide), picking one up will reduce one star .

 

  3) Changing your outfit - by doing this you can reduce two wanted level stars.

 

 

    When you are 'busted' by a member of the law, you will be taken to the nearest police station. Any mission you may have been on at the time will be failed. You can only be 'busted' if you have acquired a wanted level. The more wanted level stars you have, the harder the law will try to bust you. You will have your weapons taken away from you, but you can pay a bribe of so much money to have them returned - a new feature to GTA.

    When you get 'wasted!' you will be taken to the nearest hospital in the city. You will have your weapons take away from you, but you can pay a bribe of $100 to get them back.
